KUKI GALLMANN

Kuki Gallmann is an Italian-born author, conservationist and roaming world ambassador for environmental causes. Her best selling book, I Dreamed of Africa has been translated into 21 languages and she has won international awards too numerous to mention here.

Kuki moved to Kenya over thirty years ago and settled in Laikipia on a 100,000 acre estate on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. After the tragic loss of both her husband and her son, who died in her arms from the fatal bite of a puff adder, her deep love of Africa and the desire to protect it transformed into a burning resolve to save its wilderness, wildlife and culture. It was here that Kuki found her life purpose. Gallmann dedicated herself to keeping its dream alive. As a memorial to her husband and son, she established the Gallmann Memorial Foundation with the specific purpose to harmonize development and conservation. Ol ari Nyiro was transformed into a Nature Conservatory and is registered as a black rhino sanctuary, which supports the largest black rhino population outside Kenya’s national parks. It is also refuge to zebra, elephant, buffalo, cheetah leopard, lion, impala and the only protect indigenous forest remaining in the area.
