First Day
First day on the set.
The first day on any set is always exciting. You are meeting the crew and fellow actors, some you haven’t seen in years. You’re learning the lay of the land and everyone’s timing.
There is also an air of anticipation: Do I still have the chops? How will we all interact with each other? How will the audience relate? After a bit those thoughts leave your mind and you begin easing into character and the craft you have chosen as a form of expression.

Makeup Test
Makeup! Makeup! Makeup!
It’s amazing what makeup can do. It can age you or make you appear younger than your years. Theatrical makeup has work for the cameras, so it is always important to test and retest to make certain your are not creating a glare or washing out in the bright lights.
My makeup man, Eddie, was a genius. And he was psychic, too. I loved sitting in his chair. We talked about his recent “intuitive hits” as he transformed my physical being into my character.

Hair Styling
Must style that hair.
Hair, like makeup is intricate when creating a character. Fortunately wigs are so well created these days that it is a simple case of changing hair to change hairstyles. Every now and then your own hair is just what the director wants, but that’s rare.

On the Set
On the set!
When we gather on a set or sound stage we are feeling into what is to come. Rehearsal and timing are key to good performances but it also a metaphysical experience. We usually begin by talking about the scene, what it entails, what it should portray to the audience, how the characters feel about themselves and the other characters in the scene.

Lighting and Camera Tests
Befiore the director calls action...
Lighting and camera tests are behind the scenes necessities in pre-production. I’m sure you have heard that cameras can add a few extra pounds, but they can also pick up shadows and lines that most people don’t see.
Decades ago I learned this trick: When filming a woman be one half an apple crate above eye line. When filming a man, do the opposite. An apple crate is a term we use for box the camera person stands on. The point of this is to present either the male or female actors in their best looking portrait.
