want to discuss the power of prayer? Anyone have a personal experience? I mean, has anyone prayed for something, person or event and knows for sure , with prayer, produced an outcome? Let's discuss...

Hi, elizadoolittle! I completely believe in the power of prayer -- in my line of work (nun), I've witnessed numerous "miracles" that can be attributed to nothing that one can see, taste, feel, etc -- ie, no visible proof of a "reason" for the change in the person or situation except that prayer was used.
An example from my own life happened a few years before I became a nun. My best friend, Nancy, was diagnosed with throat cancer and after months of treatment, surgeries, etc hope infor her survival were slim. She was an atheist (which made my role as her friend an interesting, never dull challenge) and she was terrified of dying, because "that's it, folks; show's over." However, the majority of her wide circle of friends from all across the globe did believe in some kind of life after deather and a Higher Being called God or whatever. Anyway, in spite of her argument that "it wouldn't do any good," we decided to join in a long-distance "healing circle of prayer" for her. At precisely 7:00 pm EST every night for a week we all (there were about 15 of us involved in this "gathering") stopped whatever we were doing and focused for five minutes on nothing butserenity and acceptance and a change of heaart re: death for Nancy. She knew we were doing this and fat first she didn't take it seriously. On the third evening, however, she claimed she literally "felt" a powerful presence in her room at 7:03 pm and sensed that no matter what happened, it would be okay -- she'd be okay. She still didn't use the word "God" but something definitely was at work in her life. She died a month later in a state of calm peace and acceptance. My personal belief? PRAYER IS POWERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love, Lura Last edited by sisterlura : 12-07-2011 at 09:03 AM. |

In response to you Eliza...Many years ago, my mother had heart surgery where she was given three stints. At the time she was in her eighties and I was very concerned about this serious surgery. I stayed in the intensive care unit with her for a number of days. It was very frustrating as they would only let me in the room with her one time an hour for twenty minutes. So, I spent alot of time in the waiting room between allowed visits. There were many machines in the room as well as her ventilator. We were not chit-chatting. Her survival was at times in question I was told before I arrived. Well, during my twenty minute "prayer fest" I saw with my own eyes the numbers on her life support equiptment (for example heart rate ,etc) change and get better and better as I was praying. One nurse was kind of freaked out by this as she also witnessed what was going on on the machines first-hand as I prayed for mother....usually I was "alone" with her. Of course, I believe that our guardians, guides, allies, ancestors and angels are with us and in droves at times like this. But, I saw the scientific evidence that clearly prayer does and can work...and very rapidly, too.
Just for fun I will tell you that she turned 93 years-old today! And, I agree with you Sisterlura. I don't necessarily agree with Mr. Sweet about alot of things he said in Shirley's interview. My plants...when I had a fantastic garden a few years back were very responsive to prayers I believe! Love, Wolfdog |

Prayer is working with energy –
The west attaches it to God – but it’s not God – it’s working with energy. The east doesn’t attach enlightenment to energy work – it understands it more for what it is – energy – neutral – and how it’s used (as pointed out by the Spindrift studies) creates different effects. In China, the entire medical system and the way the body is understood is based on energy. The body can be out of balance energetically and that creates disease over time. Tumors, for example, are said to be caused by congestions of energy. This can be caused by too much or too little energy in different places. On top of that, the problems can be superficial or deep. This is why observing an effect does not really mean much in terms of healing. On the Spindrift site they say something to the effect that ego-based energy work will create obvious very visible effects but true deep healing takes longer and is more subtle. I have used healing in an intuitive way with my pets because I know about Chinese medicine and use that as a base. I had a pet who expelled her uterus once. When I went to give energy in the way suggested by “sending energy” she was not happy about it. I only intuited this because she did not settle down – although settling down takes time I sensed it was wrong. I stopped giving her energy and she was happier (again an intuitive/psychic knowledge). This was many years ago. Now I would pull energy from her – because I realize that expelling the uterus is a sign of extreme energy in the system. Healing someone energetically is very complicated. I believe that prayer or energy work that is done without the knowledge of what the person needs can appear to help but, based on my knowledge of Chinese/energetic views of disease – the appearance can be deceiving. Overall, it could be giving the impression of helping because the person can “feel” better emotionally (they can feel the energy being sent and that makes them feel good. But the effect on the body could be to hinder the healing. That was shown by the seedling study – and this is a very small example. Imagine inflammation in the body – a person could feel happy sensing the energy – they could relax – and the relaxing could help the healing process but the energy being given at the same time is hindering the healing possibly because the inflammation is a sign of too much energy and more energy is being given. In that example – a person feels better – but is actually having to work more to heal. It would be better to soothe them without adding energy and when they were relaxed without added energy – they would not have to deal with the added energy which had increased what they needed to heal in the first place. I think that sending energy to a loved one can make the sender feel good. I read something recently though – that giving a gift means we are in control. The receiver is vulnerable. I believe this holds true for energy as well. It may come from our love – but if it’s true and deep love, I believe we want to know for sure that what we are doing does not add to the disease. I believe that we would not settle for just believing. In that I am in alignment with Bill Sweet who could not understand why people would first be open to the results of his studies and then get very angry or turn away. Why would we not want to know what we are doing? Even if it meant facing that at some point we could have done things differently and really were not doing the best for the person or ourselves. It isn’t like we meant to harm – or hinder healing – but if we have the ability to learn more – so we can do more and send energy better – then I believe most people would do this for their loved ones. ~~~~~~~ PS Eliza – I believe Brit meant “I’ve experienced the power of energy etc”. In my opinion, learning about Chinese medicine and how energy flows first is the best way – then move to intuitive healing with hands – that gives you the best of two worlds – east and west.

Your point about energy is one that I have often considered, in particular the idea of offering energy unsolicited or offered in a way that is intended to be helpful but is not. Often, I offer prayer/energy for someone's highest good, yet even in that, I have reservations.
Your inflammation example really exhibits the power of too much of a good thing. Imagine all the healthy immune systems and the subsequent decrease in auto-immune disease if the Western medical model adopted this premise as a basis for treatment. Excellent post, Free, most mindful. Love and Peace, Tgumster |
