Question Bewitched!

I went with my family last night to see Bewitched. It was very clever but I must say, it ended oddly and we were all left feeling like the producer told the film editor to just wrap it up quick and end it.

The role Shirley played (Iris/Endora) was DELIGHTFUL! She was terrific, but they really didn't use the thousand opportunities they had to create connections for her character and the story line.

Everyone was waiting to see Shirley & Michael Caine in the final scene somewhere "looking on" at "Samantha & Darren" so there would be some connection/approval/explanation and closure. Her character gives us a clue early on that she just might be more than an actress while she is carefully watching the filming of a scene with a dog jumping onto Samantha. She has a brief chat with Samantha where she may or may not be telling her who she really is and then the only other "magical" thing we see from Iris is some manipulation of a couple young girls Samantha's father notices.

If the writer thought to include scenes with an Aunt Clara and an Uncle Arthur, she certainly could have written a scene for Michael Caine and Shirley where he finds out who she is and so do Samantha and Darren. Iris could have said she was the real inspiration for that "other" Endora on TV and she could have even known Aunt Clara "for centuries" being schoolmates or something.

I think Shirley had far too little time onscreen. This was a moment where the studio should recognize that Will Ferrell, Nicole Kidman, Shirley Macliane and Michael Caine all carried this movie and had the youngsters not had the mentors onscreen too, this would have fallen flat.

The audience in the theater was smiling and excited when all the characters were interacting and as the end neared and it was just Will Ferrel, Nicole and the guy who played Uncle Arthur, the audience seemed like someone let all the air out of the tires. The film ended in complete silence and everyone left the theater without any chattering or excitement.

Nora and the film editor's really missed a HUGE opportunity for the movie by not writing (or maybe leaving in) more scenes with Maclaine and Caine.
I found myself completely uninterested in the Nicole/Will characters.

Do another movie Shirley- "Endora". I want to see more about that character.

Did anyone else see the film yet and what did YOU think??

Wink Angelfledgeling...Yes I Loved Shirley; Caine; & Nicole

Sorry but there is only so much one can take of WILL...he just gets to over the top...but in a bad way....like a train wreck...the first part of the movie was good...but by the dinner scene no one wanted to look at WILL...he LOST it even WORSE....I loved every scene with Nicole & Endora & Caine was amazing as usual...It was great when SHIRLEY ...made the young girls say stuff ....Like Hi my names so & so ...I have Hepatitus C...everyone laughed until they hurt...I completely agree...the older couple needed more air time & contact with the younger couple...Shirley & Caine...& even Nicole did a fabulous job...Will was out to lunch the second half of the film! Plus the writers kind of dropped the ball in most of the scenes with Nicole & WILL FROM THE DINNER SCENE ON! i HAVE TO SAY NICOLE HAS DEFINETLY GOTTEN BETTER WITH AGE...IT REALLY SHOWS IN HER ACTING! And as always SHIRLEY you were Fabulous! The well seasoned actors always rub off on the younger ones...& that is great...I don't think any amount of rubbing could polish Will...he has one MODE only...unfortunetly...no Variety...there!

Default Encouragement to see the film

Quite interesting to see the comments about the movie. I don't see many but always try to see those with Ms MacLaine in them, no matter what part she plays. So far, I have not seen Betwitched because of the presence of Will but may be forced to go just to confirm what was said by the previous writers. Sometimes actors are so bad it is almost funny to watch, once one gets past the feeling of embarrassment for them.

Thanks for the critique.

We go to the movies every Friday night and, of course, this past Friday we saw Bewitched. I enjoyed it even tho' I'm not crazy about Will Ferrell. My husband enjoyed it too even tho' he prefers action flicks. I absolutely agree with the above posts that suggest more screen time with Caine and Shirley would have upgraded the film a notch. The audience loved Shirley's hexes. I wonder why she does them so well. More of that would have been more reminiscent of the TV show. Nicole was very good too. I loved looking at the two redheads.

The SFChronicle film critic said: "...it's funny, easily the funniest and least self-conscious movie that director Nora Ephron has made."

My friend and I, and the audience, thoroughly enjoyed this film. MacClaine and Caine (hey, that rhymes) were enchanting.
