Default Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down The Bones

Hello creative writers of the Encounter Board!

I am not a writer--well, I am a legal writer, which is only occasionally sparked with true creativity--but I am reading a book by Natalie Goldberg called Writing Down the Bones. Have any of you read it or are you familiar with it or Natalie? She is a writer and Zen practitioner. I discovered her while listening to an Upaya Zen Center podcast. What I love about the book is that she describes the writing process as a practice--as seated meditation is a practice--that cuts through the ego to get to the core of original human thought. Isn't that amazing? It sounds just like meditation to me. So, I have started a writing practice as described by Natalie in Writing Down the Bones--not to become a writer, but as a complement to my meditation practice as a journey to the root of thought and consciousness.

Some of the tools and methods (upayas) that Natalie suggests sounds much like "channelled" writing, which Shirley has mentioned several times in interviews when asked about the motivation of writing What If . . .? I wonder if she is familiar with Natalie and Writing Down the Bones?

Are any of you familiar with the book or Natalie's work or would you be interested in joining me in reading it? Maybe we could establish a "writing practice" circle here. That might be a little difficult electronically over the internet and not in person, but I'd be willing to try.

Namaste from the Midwest,
stephanie
