Default Doug Noll, Esq., July 8, 2007

Just listened to this on the way home today...Ha! There ARE peaceful lawyers out there! I try to be one and stay mindful that Gandhi, also, was a lawyer.

Noll is absolutely correct that we are trained to thrive in conflict and to be overly zealous, vigilant, suspicious. Like Noll, I also meditate daily every morning, and just that practice alone has transformed my practice and made me a better attorney (and yes, more peaceful).

Mediation and arbitration are used regularly now to resolve conflicts in my area of practice and others like family law (not my practice). I also appreciated that Brit acknowledged at the end of the interview that these listening mediation circles of dispute resolution have been and still are used in Native American cultures. When I was in law school, I did a research project on incorporating Native American peace practices in traditional western dispute resolution. Still try to keep those lessons in mind all these years later.

Great interview!

Namaste from the Midwest (and happy Halloween!),
Steph
