I think one of the most profound experiences I've had with the dead is recounted in the chapter about Mr. Contini in Baltho, The Dog Who Owned a Man. I was surprised to learn that he'd died some time before, since I'd seen him out walking his yard as he always did. I just couldn't figure out why he didn't speak to me as he'd always done. I came to the conclusion in talking with his adult daughter and widow that he didn't realize that I saw him.
