Chat tech issues

We know some of you are having problems getting into the chat room...

Just to let you know we are working on it. Each problem seems to be different, yet they are probably all related.

Will keep you posted.

Chat is working again!

Hi Brit!

I had to configure java to add the SM site to the exception list under the security tab and restore security prompts. It only allowed me to do this when I selected medium security level.

ShelleyD 02-28-2014 05:07 PM

Oh my gosh! OS...you are a genius!
I have not been able to get into chat for about a month. Tried everything.
I just tried your suggestion and it works!!

Thanks!! :D

Cher O 03-01-2014 05:45 PM

Thanks, OS!

I tried it too and now I'm in! Thanks so much. Love, C.

Norma Rae 03-02-2014 06:04 PM

not working for me even with the security changes . . .

Brit 03-03-2014 10:09 AM

We are working on this - it's such a massive part of the site...
If OS' patch doesn't work, please try a different browser...
And have patience :)
Thanks

Java Signature Update

It appears that the security signature has not been updated for the SM website. The security certificate is outdated.

Brit 03-03-2014 07:54 PM

Hi Kata
I just checked all our certificates - they are all updated. But - It seems some browsers are kicking them out. Will start on that issue as soon as I corral a couple others :)

Java issue

Ok, my husband checked on two different computers, one with Internet Explorer and one with Chrome. Both said the certificate was out of date. So for sure those two browsers have issues. Good luck!

A Dreamer 03-05-2014 12:36 PM

I just tried Mozilla Firefox and that browser gave me the
same error message. Good luck, Brit.

Norma Rae 03-05-2014 02:16 PM

Browsers do not seem to like the Java Deployment Toolkit plug-in. Even when I have removed all of the security blocks on that application and set it to either "ask permission" or "always allow," it remains blocked.

Best I can figure right now....

OneLight 03-06-2014 07:25 PM

I tried OS's suggestion and it works for me.
I am using Internet Explorer and my security level
is set to high (which is the middle of the bar).

When I go into Chat, Java (32bit) comes up and asks
if I want to run the app, and I say yes and get
right in.

I am able to get into chat...at last....and I hope it lasts this time.

I am using Firefox but I don't think the browser really matters as the
settings you change are in Java which is working no matter which browser you use.

Go to All Programs/Java/Configure Java/ Security tab
Then click on the exceptions button and enter both of these URL's
Be sure to enter them exactly as I show them. They must have https
at the beginning:

https://www.shirleymaclaine.com
https://www.shirleymaclaine.com/chat/chatphp

Add each one separately and click "ok" I was able to leave my setting at High Medium.

Hope this helps

Hey AD

After our Chat last night, I rechecked my exception settings in the Java
Control Panel. I did not use "https", so tried an experiment and redid it
using your suggestion (with the "s" after http). I was completely blocked
from getting in with no pop up option to override it. So I changed it back
again to my original (http://shirleymaclaine.com). I get a Java pop up
stating a possible security risk but gives me the option to "run" it anyway.
When I do, I get right into the Chat Room. I do not use your second entry
of "...chat/chatphp".

I am on Windows 8 and run Internet Explorer 10 as my browser, so maybe
the browser one uses does make a difference on what you use as the url
string.

Just a thought...
Peg

I don't know when I apparently became so computer illiterate, but tried all of these suggestions, and still not working.

So . . . look out your windows during Sunday night chats towards Chicago, and I will be the one communicating via smoke signals.

A Dreamer 03-14-2014 08:03 AM

Hi Peg and Steph,

Peg, I had the same results as you when I didn't add the "s". I have been working on this for a couple of months. At one time it did work without the "s" and then the next week I was shut out again. I use Chrome or Firefox and they both work now with the added "s". My OS is Windows 7.

Sorry you can't find a solution, Steph. I'll miss seeing you in chat. I'll be waving toward Chicago, so look out your window on Sunday at 9 pm. :)

OY...
We are trying to duplicate and stop the problem....
without a lot of success.
I think it's about time for a site redesign.
We'll keep working and see what we can do.
SO sorry!

Still issues

The Java chat room wont deploy. :(

ShelleyD 04-14-2014 05:17 PM

I just tried it and it still works for me.
Of course I am in there all by myself. Lol

Norma Rae 04-16-2014 07:17 AM

message received!

The Universe must have received my signals because I can now launch the chat room successfully! See you all next Sunday!

GentleRick 05-23-2014 12:53 PM

Any updates to specific ways to enable the Java plug-in so that it clears the security risk?

I'm working with my new laptop, Windows 8.1.

ShelleyD 05-23-2014 02:46 PM

Rick....we both know you are way more tech savvy than I, but this is what I did and now I can get in....

Click on Java
Then Java Configuration
Then click Java security tab up top.
Then I had to lower the security from High to Medium
Add SM.com to the "Exception Site List"
And then click on "Restore Security Prompts"
Then click "OK" to save it all

GentleRick 05-24-2014 06:26 AM

Yay! It worked...Thanks Shelley...

lovesgift 05-28-2014 11:18 AM

Drat, it didn't work for me. I have yet to use the chat rooms because I can't get in.

A Dreamer 06-13-2014 08:00 AM

lovesgift,

Try using https/www.shirleymaclaine.com when you enter the site
into the Java exceptions. Follow Shelly's instructions and enter it
with https not just http and see if that works for you. That is how
it worked for me.

Good luck,
AD

I've updated to Mac OSX Yosemite and can no longer enter the chat room.

Apple released their new operating system OS 10.10 (Yosemite) in beta form and after spending hours backing up my system and uploading all the needed software, I'm no longer able to get into the chat room. I have tried all the tricks listed here on this Encounter Board thread with no luck.

The Safari internet browser software throws me out of the member logged-in website when I click on "Launch Chat Window." I'm immediately taken to the page which states, "The page you requested is for paying members only." in red. I'm not actually logged out of the site, just from chat.

With Firefox, I receive the message, below, "Could not connect to www.shirleymaclaine.com:8080." I'll try and bring my computer into work to ask our Help Desk to fix this latter problem. I have no idea how to fix the Safari issue.

The only other internet browser software that I have is Opera which gives me the same message as Firefox.

As I use a Mac, Internet Explorer is, unfortunately, not an option.

RobKendall 07-27-2014 05:56 PM

We're in Chat!

I found that I was able to get into Chat using my partner Clark's older Mac.

Norma Rae 07-27-2014 07:08 PM

great to talk to you in chat tonight, Robbie! the fact that you had to use an older computer to get into chat is interesting. time for a website update, i think!

steph
