Imagine That: ‘Walter Mitty’ Is Centerpiece of New York Film Festival
By DAVE ITZKOFF
“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” originated as a classic short story in The New Yorker, so it’s only fitting that a new film adaptation of it should have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. Ben Stiller’s cinematic take on the James Thurber tale, which Mr. Stiller directed and in which he plays the melancholy daydreamer of its title, will be presented on Oct. 5 as the centerpiece gala selection of the New York Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center said Thursday.
The Thurber story, about a milquetoast man with an active fantasy life, was first published in 1939 and anthologized in 1942; it also yielded a 1947 film that starred Danny Kaye. Mr. Stiller’s movie, which will receive a theatrical release from 20th Century Fox on Dec. 25, also stars Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, Patton Oswalt and Sean Penn.
In a statement Kent Jones, the director of programming and selection committee chairman of the New York Film Festival, described this new version of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” as “one terrific ride,” adding, “Ben Stiller has expanded on James Thurber’s beloved short story and crafted a beautifully lyrical comic epic, grounded in present day realities and concerns.”
This year’s festival will run from Sept. 27 through Oct. 13. Its opening night selection will be “Captain Phillips,” starring Tom Hanks in a thriller about a real-life hijacking.
And more than that, too!!!
Should be a great one.
Looking forward to this one! Thanks Brit!
