U.S. carbon emissions level lowest in 20 years?
CBS News Radio reports today that the U.S. is generating its LOWEST levels of carbon emissions in 20 years!
While this seems very unlikely, the report goes on to say that the main reason is that higher coal and oil prices have driven energy consumption towards natural gas, which has a reduced carbon footprint compared to other fossil fuels. Natural gas is currently equal to coal as a source for energy. Should market changes shift back to cheaper coal, the trend will cease. In addition, the report did not indicate that alternative, cleaner energy was in any way responsible for this major dip: http://soundcloud.com/cbs-radio-news/greenhouse-gas |
