I went with my family last night to see Bewitched. It was very clever but I must say, it ended oddly and we were all left feeling like the producer told the film editor to just wrap it up quick and end it.

The role Shirley played (Iris/Endora) was DELIGHTFUL! She was terrific, but they really didn't use the thousand opportunities they had to create connections for her character and the story line.

Everyone was waiting to see Shirley & Michael Caine in the final scene somewhere "looking on" at "Samantha & Darren" so there would be some connection/approval/explanation and closure. Her character gives us a clue early on that she just might be more than an actress while she is carefully watching the filming of a scene with a dog jumping onto Samantha. She has a brief chat with Samantha where she may or may not be telling her who she really is and then the only other "magical" thing we see from Iris is some manipulation of a couple young girls Samantha's father notices.

If the writer thought to include scenes with an Aunt Clara and an Uncle Arthur, she certainly could have written a scene for Michael Caine and Shirley where he finds out who she is and so do Samantha and Darren. Iris could have said she was the real inspiration for that "other" Endora on TV and she could have even known Aunt Clara "for centuries" being schoolmates or something.

I think Shirley had far too little time onscreen. This was a moment where the studio should recognize that Will Ferrell, Nicole Kidman, Shirley Macliane and Michael Caine all carried this movie and had the youngsters not had the mentors onscreen too, this would have fallen flat.

The audience in the theater was smiling and excited when all the characters were interacting and as the end neared and it was just Will Ferrel, Nicole and the guy who played Uncle Arthur, the audience seemed like someone let all the air out of the tires. The film ended in complete silence and everyone left the theater without any chattering or excitement.

Nora and the film editor's really missed a HUGE opportunity for the movie by not writing (or maybe leaving in) more scenes with Maclaine and Caine.
I found myself completely uninterested in the Nicole/Will characters.

Do another movie Shirley- "Endora". I want to see more about that character.
